Destination: Portland!

There are those places that you go to visit and they immediately have a sense of home, like the people there are familiar and the cadence in the street just resonates on a different level. Portland has been one of those places for me but I hadn’t visited in years…. long before covid. It was a mostly affluent, hipster smallish city from what I remembered and when I booked a weekend there to get my daughter settled into the PSU dorms for a summer program, I was thrilled to get to poke around and rediscover the city.

Portland is a city nestled between the majestic peaks of Mount Hood and the tranquil waters of the Willamette River. The city effortlessly blends the allure of an urban metropolis with the serenity of nature, creating a unique atmosphere that is both invigorating and calming. Whether you're exploring the city's lush parks, indulging in farm-to-table cuisine, or immersing yourself in its vibrant arts scene, Portland has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you with unforgettable memories. Ah, Portland! A city that never fails to captivate with its vibrant energy and unique charm. Before we dive into the top tourist attractions and landmarks, let's talk about what makes Portland truly one-of-a-kind.

Now, Portland is a city that has a lot to offer, but it's important to be aware of certain aspects that may impact your visit. One thing to note is the significant number of un-housed individuals in the city. While Portland is generally a safe place to explore, it's always a good idea to stay vigilant about your surroundings and exercise common sense, especially when wandering around at night. I recommend staying out of Chinatown. Being mindful of this aspect will help ensure a positive and enjoyable experience during your time in the city.

With that said, let's move on to the exciting and unique features that make Portland stand out. One of the things that immediately comes to mind is the city's thriving winery scene. Portland is surrounded by picturesque vineyards, and the Willamette Valley, in particular, is renowned for its world-class wines. Whether you're a connoisseur or simply enjoy a good glass of vino, exploring the local wineries is a must-do activity. From family-owned boutique wineries to larger estates, you'll have plenty of options to satisfy your palate and indulge in the flavors of the region.

But wait, there's more! Portland is also famous for its robust microbrewery scene. In fact, the city boasts more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States. Craft beer enthusiasts will find themselves in hop heaven here. With an incredible variety of styles and flavors to choose from, you can embark on a beer tasting adventure like no other. From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts, there's something to please every beer lover's taste buds.

In addition to its thriving winery and microbrewery scenes, Portland seamlessly blends urban charm with natural beauty. The city is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including the majestic Mount Hood and the breathtaking Columbia River Gorge. This unique combination of city life and outdoor adventure makes Portland a dream destination for nature lovers and urban explorers alike. You can spend the morning wandering through the city's eclectic neighborhoods, browsing independent boutiques and sampling delicious food trucks, and then escape to the nearby forests and waterfalls for an afternoon of hiking and exploration.

All of these unique elements contribute to making Portland an unforgettable destination. Whether you're a wine enthusiast, a beer lover, or simply someone who appreciates the fusion of urban culture and natural beauty, this city has something to offer you. So, get ready to immerse yourself in Portland's distinct culture, indulge in its delicious libations, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere that sets this city apart.

Portland's food culture is a delightful mix of innovation, sustainability, and local sourcing. The farm-to-table movement is deeply ingrained in the city's culinary ethos, with many restaurants showcasing the best of Oregon's bountiful produce. From trendy eateries to hidden gems, you'll find a wide range of dining options to suit every palate and budget. Two of our favorite meals of the trip were, our casual Vietnamese meal at Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen, with the wild neon lights and the delicious curries it was a fun spot for sure! The other stand out meal was the Chefs table/tasting menu at Ava Gene’s. *chefs kiss*. You can see from the photos above that we left stuffed and very satisfied!

If you're looking for a unique culinary experience, don't miss the food carts that dot the city. These mobile kitchens offer an incredible variety of cuisines, from Mexican and Thai to Middle Eastern and vegan delights. Grab a plate of mouthwatering tacos, a comforting bowl of ramen, or a freshly baked pastry, and enjoy your meal at one of the city's vibrant food cart pods.

For coffee enthusiasts, Portland is a haven of artisanal coffee shops and cafes. The city takes its coffee seriously, and you'll find an abundance of specialty coffee roasters serving up the perfect cup of joe. Don't forget to pair your coffee with a locally made pastry or a decadent doughnut from one of Portland's famous bakeries.

If high tea is more your speed that coffee I can’t recommend Abigail Hall in the Woodlark Hotel enough! The tea selection was wonderful, all of the little sandwiches and sweets were delicious and the tea smoked Old Fashioned was a lovely twist on a classic cocktail. Make your reservations in advance!

The city is surrounded by stunning parks, picturesque trails, and scenic spots that will leave you in awe. Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the country, offers over 80 miles of trails for hiking, trail running, and even horseback riding. Lose yourself in the tranquil beauty of towering trees, babbling creeks, and breathtaking views of the city. In the summer the Japanese Garden and the International Rose Test Garden were the perfect respite after a long day. There was a silent concert playing right next to the rose garden and provided a very unexpected delight for us!

For a more challenging adventure, head to Multnomah Falls, a majestic waterfall located just a short drive from Portland. Standing at an impressive 620 feet, this iconic landmark is a sight to behold. Hike to the top for a rewarding view or simply enjoy the beauty of the falls from the base. Either way, it's an experience that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

As you explore the great outdoors in and around Portland, take the time to immerse yourself in the unique cultural aspects of the city. From the vibrant arts scene to the lively music festivals, Portland has a lot to offer in terms of cultural experiences.
